Corrosion

Corrosion is an expensive problem directly related to energy, an even greater problem.  The oil and gas industry in particular is acutely aware of the damaging effects of the oxidation of pipelines.  Corrosion is an electrochemical process which can be inhibited.  In addition, better materials can be developed to resist the damaging effects of corrosion.

Electrocatalysis

In general, electrocatalysis refers to the heterogenous catalysis of an electrochemical reaction.  Most often, this reaction occurs at the electrode|electrolyte interface where the electrode acts as both an electron donor and electron acceptor.  Often molecular catalysts are cast onto the surface of an electrode to drive the catalytic process.
