MERCURY DISCLOSURE: To function properly, this electrode necessarily contains a small amount of mercury. The maximum amount of mercury in this electrode is 1.8 grams. See SDS Forms tab for safety information.
Avoid using this reference electrode with the following: acids, cations that will form insoluble hydroxides, and non-aqueous/organic solvents
The reference electrode fits through the standard 14/20 ground glass joints found on our standard electrochemical cells. A PTFE sleeve (included) facilitates mounting the reference electrode in the joint.
The junction at the lower end of the reference electrode is a PE frit that should be kept wet at all times. Be advised: the PE frit on the mercury oxide reference electrode has a higher leak rate than a typical ceramic frit found on most other reference electrodes. It may not be uncommon to notice the fill solution has drained after some time in storage. Periodic refilling of the fill solution may be required and can be considered part of normal operation and care of this reference electrode.
An extra storage bottle of fill solution is not included with the single junction mercury oxide reference electrode for safety purposes during shipping. Users may need to prepare their own 4.24M KOH solution for refilling reference electrode.
If frit dries out, soak overnight in distilled water. More information about care, storage, and usage can be found in the product information sheet, which you can download from the Documentation tab. Additionally, the tip and frit for the single junction mercury oxide reference electrode is a separate threaded part and can be replaced without needing to purchase a whole new electrode. Should just the frit need replacing, that part may be purchased separately. See pricing table for part number and details.
