CASFER 1 day EIS Workshop 2026

CASFER is hosting a 1 day EIS workshop in concert with it's Fall Student Symposium. The workshop is an all day event designed to give graduate students, postdocs, junior faculty, and industry members an introduction to Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy. The workshop aims to impart both theoretical as well as practical skills when performing EIS experiments, allowing scholars to translate classroom concepts into real applications.

The workshop takes place on Friday, September 18th, 2026. The workshop will be held at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX.

Senior Research Associate

Dr. Alvarez-Pugliese is a Senior Research Associate working in the Chemical Engineering Department at Texas Tech University. He is CASFER’s Research and Team Science Coordinator. He has Chemical Engineering and Economics studies, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Universidad del Valle (Colombia) with over 10 years of experience working on electrochemistry at laboratory, pilot, and semi-industrial scale. His research topics include: electrocatalysis for ammonia oxidation, BDD electrochemical oxidation of industrial effluents, iron electro-dissolution and coagulation of landfill leachate, gold adsorption / electro-elution and electrodeposition from activated carbon, and catalytic ozonation wastewater treatment.  

He is an active member of the International Society of Electrochemistry (ISE), Electrochemical Society (ECS) and is the Associate Editor for the Journal of Applied Electrochemistry. He has taken part of innovation-base entrepreneurships and has served as business and technology transfer consultant.

Alex Peroff joined the Pine Research team as an Electroanalytical Scientist in 2016. Alex came to Pine Research after earning his Ph.D. at Northwestern University under the direction of Richard Van Duyne and Eric Weitz. Following his doctorate, Alex completed a post-doctoral position at SUNY Albany. Alex resides in the Durham, North Carolina area.

Dr. Yaguang Zhu is an assistant professor at the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering and the Institute for Sustainability and Circular Economy at Texas Tech University. He obtained his Ph.D. in Energy, Environmental, and Chemical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis in 2022. He worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment at Princeton University from 2022 to 2025. Dr Zhu’s research advances CO₂ and water valorization by designing reactive environmental interfaces and developing operando, 3D diagnostic tools, especially synchrotron X-ray methods, to reveal interfacial heterogeneity and failure mechanisms under realistic conditions. He applies this interface-to-systems approach to reactive carbon capture and electrified chemical synthesis, 2D (MXene) membranes with engineered surface chemistry for selective critical-element/resource recovery, and SERS-enabled plasmonic platforms for sensitive detection and monitoring of interfacial chemistry.

Introduction to EIS, why do EIS, mathematical definition of impedance, applied and measured sinusoidal waveforms, plotting EIS data, validity of EIS data.

Students perform a series of experiments involving hypochlorite electrochemistry in a 3 electrode configuration.

Students will spend time analyzing their data, performing circuit fitting and answering questions for flash presentations next.
