Pine/Villanova CV Boot Camp 2025

About

The Pine/Villanova CV Boot Camp is a 3 day workshop designed to give both graduate, undergraduate, postdocs, and faculty both theoretical and practical hands on experience performing electrochemistry, cyclic voltammetry, and UV/Vis spectroelectrochemistry experiments.  During the workshop attendees with attend lectures on, fundamental electrochemistry, cyclic voltammetry, iR compensation, potentiostat operation, UV/Vis spectroelectrochemistry, and CV simulations.  Attendees will perform hands on CV experiments, CV simulation, and UV/Vis Spectroelectrochemistry.  Not only will students learn the theoretical aspects of electrochemistry, but also the practical aspects and how to troubleshoot electrochemistry experiments.

The workshop has a nominal fee to cover food, lab equipment, and administrative expenses.  Optional housing on campus is available for those traveling from out of town for an additional fee.  We accepted 24 applicants each year for the workshop.

  • Postdoc – $150
  • Faculty – $150

After registering for the workshop, you will hear back from us within 1-2 weeks after registration closes to find out whether you’ve been accepted.  Once accepted you will be notified by the workshop host on the next steps in preparation for the workshop.

Alex Peroff joined the Pine Research team as an Electroanalytical Scientist in 2016. Alex came to Pine Research after earning his Ph.D. at Northwestern University under the direction of Richard Van Duyne and Eric Weitz. Following his doctorate, Alex completed a post-doctoral position at SUNY Albany. Alex resides in the Durham, North Carolina area.

Math and data analysis is an important component of electrochemistry. This section of the workshop covers the basic math as well as plotting methods for the rest of the workshop. Topics include performing a linear regression and using excel as well as others.

Introduction to electroanalytical chemistry, topics include, the Electrode Potential, Electrical Double Layer, Nernst Equation, The Electrochemical Cell (3-electrode) and Faradaic vs Non-Faradaic current.

Part 2 of Introduction to electroanalytical chemistry, topics include, mass transport, homogeneous vs heterogeneous electron transfer, solution resistance, chronoamperometry, and cyclic voltammetry.

We'll go over basic lab safety, PPE, hazardous chemicals, etc. Alex will go over using the potentiostat and AfterMath, as well as performing iR compensation.

Lecture: How a Potentiostat Works and iR compensation

Alex goes over how a potentiostat works, covering topics such as operational amplifiers, feedback loops, and what a potentiostat is doing during a CV experiment. How a potentiostat accounts for iR compensation and the importance of iR compensation is also discussed.

Jared covers molecular orbital theory and UV/Vis spectroscopy in preparation for the UV/Vis spectroelectrochemistry experiment tomorrow.

Students will learn the basics of UV/Vis spectroscopy and perform a short lab where they will take UV/Vis spectra and prepare for tomorrow's lab on spectroelectrochemistry.

Lecture: Electrochemical Reversibility and Coupled Chemical Reactions.

Lecture discusses the concept and topic of electrochemical reversibility and chemical reversibility. Everything thus far has been a single electron transfer reaction, what happens when you have multiple electron and chemical reactions occurring.

Lab: UV/Vis-Spectroelectrochemistry / Troubleshooting Stations

Students are broken up into 2 groups. One group does electrochemical troubleshooting stations and the other group does UV/Vis spectroelectrochemistry experiments. After 1.5 hours the groups switch.
