These LowProfile reference electrodes are designed for use with the Screen-Printed Electrode Cells, other Low Volume Cells, and the Honeycomb Spectroelectrochemical Cell Kit. The low cost of these reference electrodes also make them ideal for nearly any application. The aqueous silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) reference electrodes are filled with a gel electrolyte* and have a small ceramic frit at the lower end of the electrode. The non-aqueous reference electrodes have an Ag wire and no filling electrolyte. The outer diameter of the electrodes is 3.4-3.5 mm and electrical connection is made via a 1.0 mm diameter pin at the top end of the electrode. This pin can accept an alligator clip or a small cable with an appropriately sized "pin and socket" connector.
The frit at the bottom of the non-aqueous reference electrodes is a porous glass material called Varapor100 (a replacement to the now-discontinued Vycor), which is a glass frit containing pores of around 10 nm in diameter. This glass frit is fixed in place via FEP heat shrink tubing, and can be removed and replaced with a new glass frit if needed. Porous glass frit replacement kits are available and can be purchased separately.
*The gel is comprised of a mixture of potassium chloride, glycerol, and cellulose gum.

Three different lengths are available for the aqueous LowProfile reference electrodes. The standard version, which is 74 mm long, is intended for use with our Screen-Printed Electrode Cells and Low Volume Cells. The shorter version, which is 60 mm long, is intended for use with our Honeycomb Spectroelectrochemical Cell. Additionally, Pine Research offers an extra long version for taller cells, or cells with long necks, that is 110 mm long.
Two different lengths are available for the non-aqueous LowProfile reference electrodes. The standard version, which is overall 93 mm long, is intended for use with our Screen-Printed Electrode Cells and Low Volume Cells. The shorter version, which is overall 62 mm long, is intended for use with our Honeycomb Spectroelectrochemical Cell.

The Ag/AgCl reference electrodes may not provide continuous good performance in non-aqueous solvents. The fill solution (gel) is aqueous based. For non-aqueous use, we recommend the related LowProfile Silver (Ag) Pseudo-Reference Electrode.
